Character designs - Ascalon

Initial style tests.

Prelim designs 1 for Ascalon's three stages; child, juvenile and adult.

It was suggested that I make the eyes on the adult narrower.

Prelim designs 2, this time of the full body.

Horn designs. As Ascalon is shy, calm and easily frightened,  I thought the shape and alignment of her horns should reflect that. Classmates agreed that upwards facing horns looked more extrovert and downwards facing more introvert.

I chose the angular downwards facing horns as Charlie told me the smooth ones strongly resembled ears.

Spine/spike/crest designs.

Went for a combination of purpose - to protect the head, and character. But I thought that little flick forward gave a hint of spunk. :D

Wing designs - Spyro, Dragonheart-ish, Wayne Anderson, Flight of Dragons, bat-like, "traditional".

I felt the "Dragonheart" wing looked more natural.

Initial final design.

I then looked through all my style tests and initial designs, picked out all the stuff I liked and compiled them into one reference document.

Then began work on the head and face.

Then the body and wings.

Final B+W

I focused on cool or pale colours to reflect Ascalon's calm and shy demeanor. My other choice was the pale green and blue but I liked the contrast between the cool blue and warm pink.

Final coloured
